2nd Annual MHS Alumni Reception a success.
Great get together for Melbourne High School Alumni
The MHS alumni reception held Friday evening October 13, 2006 was very successful with many MelHi alumni present. Principal Jim Willcoxon updated the alumni on future renovations at the school and other activities and accomplishments of students. Many of the alumni perused the yearbooks reminiscing about high school days. A continous slide show ran showing pictures of MelHi activities and students over the years. Many of the alumni took advantage of and enjoyed the catered barbecue dinner. A table was set up with various desserts and snacks. Then the alumni was treated to a performance by the MelHi Band and the Miracles Dance and Drill team. The reception was followed by the homecoming football game with Melbourne High Bulldogs against the Bayside Bears. All alumni attending the reception was admitted to the game free. Bayside won the game 27 to 14. Click on the picture to see a larger one of classmates from the class of '64 attending the reception. How about them "Gators"!!!

Florida Gators win National Championship in a romp over UCLA. Gators take it to UCLA 73-57. Joakim Noah and the Florida Gators, the tennis star's son dominated UCLA with 16 points, nine rebounds and a record six blocks tonight to key the 73-57 blowout for Florida's first national title in basketball. Florida won by putting on a thorough display of versatility and unselfishness, a trademark of this team all season. The Bruins (32-7) were on a defensive tear coming into the championship game, shutting down LSU's Glen Davis in the semifinals and allowing a total of 90 points in the last two games. Florida, though, was just too much to handle. The Gators won by taking it to UCLA early, looking to Noah, Corey Brewer and senior Adrian Moss down low, finishing with 21 assists, 10 of them from their frontcourt. Joakim Noah selected as games MVP.
Bill Slentz longtime area pharmacist retires
Bill Slentz retires after 49 years as a pharmacist. Bill came to West Melbourne in 1967 buying Huggins Drugs and renaming it Minton Corner Drugs which was located at Mintons Corner when US192 was a two lane road. When US192 was widened to four lanes the Minton Corner strip center was reduced to a couple of stores and a new strip center was built behind these stores. A new shopping center was built on the corner of Wickham Road and US192 with Minton Corner Drugs becoming a major tenant in the center. Bill later sold Minton Corner Drugs but remained as a pharmacist. In later years he went to work for Walgreen's and has worked at the Walgreen's Pharmacy in the store on the corner of Wickham and US192. To read more about Bill's retirement click HERE.
Jennifer Kesse missing from Orlando, FL.
Take a look at the information on Jennifer Kesse missing from Orlando, Florida since the morning of Tuesday January 24th, 2006. To get more information or numbers if you have any clues go to jenniferkesse.com.
Jenn, as family and friends know her, was reported missing when she failed to show up for work on the morning of Tuesday January 24th, 2006. For those of us close to Jenn, we knew something must be wrong. If she was going to be late for work or a meeting she would call. In fact Jenn had good routines – she and Rob, her boyfriend called each other everyday while driving to work in the morning and would speak with each other every night before going to bed. On the night of Monday January 23rd, she talked to my husband and I, later with some friends and she and Rob talked by phone as usual and that was the last anyone has heard from Jenn. Not enough interest to have a get together over the holidays.
I only received two responses from people visiting during the holidays. Since there wasn't enough interest shown I didn't plan anything. Maybe sometime in the future.

Alumni Reception held at Melbourne High School a fantastic success.
The Alumni Reception for Melbourne High Alumni was held in the MelHi auditorium Friday September 30th. The reception was a fantastic success with Alumni from the early years of MelHi to future graduates slated to graduate in 2008. A slide show was running that had pictures taken from yearbooks over the years. There was an elaborate table of food which had more items than I could sample. Students from the MelHi culinary academy walked around the event with trays of goodies that they had prepared. The highlight of the evening was when the Pride of MelHi the MelHi marching band assembled in front of the auditorium and played several great renditions for the Alumni. After the reception we went over to the football stadium for the game with the Alumni getting free general admission. The Melbourne High PTO sponsored the event. It is planned to be a yearly event in conjunction with the homecoming game each year. So make plans to be there next year.
Photos of the reception and game can be viewed here.
Wall of Fame established at Melbourne High Shool honoring distinguished alumni of the school.
The PTO has started a new project selecting Melbourne High School Alumni who have distinguished themselves in some way over the years. This years inductees are: Senator Bill Nelson Class of '60; B. Frank Brown, Principal from 1951-67; Bruce Bochy Class of '73, Manager of the San Diego Padres; and Julie Maupin-Furlow Class of '81, University of Florida Professor of Microbiology & Cell Science (and 1981 Valedictorian). They also plan to hang a picture of teachers currently at Mel-Hi that are alumni. So far they could only entice six to take a picture, but there are 13 in all ranging from Class of '69 to '99. In the near future they will be posting information and a nomination form on the PTO website so alumni can nominate a fellow graduate for next years' Wall of Fame inductees.

Henegar Homecoming
Pictures from the Henegar Homecoming day long celebration held on March 27, 2004 added. This event was held to publicize the restoration of the old Melbourne High School building. It is now called the Strawbridge Building and is part of the Henegar Center for the Arts complex. The celebration included a classic car show, open house and displays in the Henegar Center, tours of the old Melbourne High School building, Dixieland Jazz Band, Melbourne Municipal Band, dedication ceremony, kick off reception, and capped by the classic broadway musical comedy "Damn Yankees".
News from the reunion committee
As many of you know, this area was hit hard by several hurricanes last fall. The hotels beachside remain closed with re-open dates uncertain. Much more importantly, one of our committee members was diagnosed last year with breast cancer. Although Sandy is doing very well and is on her way to recovery, it has been a long and difficult year for her and for her family. For these reasons, all plans for our reunion have been suspended. When Sandy and the Brevard County area are both fully recovered, we will discuss plans for our next reunion. We wish you all good health and much happiness in this New Year. Lyn, Judy & Sandy.
Latest Reunion News
The reunion committee met recently to start planning the next reunion. The decision was made to not have a reunion until 2009 for the 45th reunion. There was some discussion about holding a smaller interim reunion but nothing definite at this time. I will keep info posted here as I receive it from the committee.
